What to Look for When Hiring a Plumber?

Just like when hiring pretty much any type of professional or contractor, there are some important things to look for when hiring a plumber as well. Let’s discuss some of the important ones in detail below.

Must be Licensed

The licensing requirement is something many homeowners overlook, but they shouldn’t. Most of them do know it’s important, but they assume the plumber they are hiring is licensed.

The fact is that many of them aren’t, and some of them may even lie about it. So make sure you verify that they are licensed by the governing body at your state or local level.

Now, someone might ask if there’s a problem with a good plumber that performs their job well but isn’t licensed? Well, the biggest problem is that their work may not make it through an inspection, which can turn out to be a big issue for many homeowners.

Clarity on the Quote

Many plumbers offer free quotes to their customers, but often times, they are only their “base” quotes.

Once they arrive and get an idea of what would it take to get the job done – including any materials and labor – they charge the customer for them separately.

So make sure you get enough clarity on the quote and try to get an idea of the “total” cost from them, instead of a basic quote which can be very misleading and allow the plumber to overcharge you to a great extent.

Who Will be Performing the Job?

Small plumbing companies are often run by just one plumber, although they may have someone helping them. And the person that will provide the quote will likely also be the one who comes over to do the job.

But if it’s a large plumbing company, they may have many different employees. In that case, you would want to ask who will be working on your job, and some details about their qualification and experience.

A good plumbing company will understand your concern and should have no problem answering these questions, but if they do or they try to avoid answering the questions, then they may not be a good fit for the job.

Must be Bonded and Insured

It’s also important to ask and make sure that the plumber you’re hiring is bonded and insured. This protects you against any accidents that might happen due to the plumber not being able to perform their job well.
